Conference: THATCamp Cyprus. September 3-4

The first THATCamp Cyprus will be held over the weekend of 3-4 September 2011 in Limassol, Cyprus, at the Cyprus University of Technology.

THATCamp (The Humanities and Technology Camp) is an open meeting where humanists and technologists of all skill levels learn and build together in sessions proposed on the spot. It is an unconference which means that there are no presentations and all participants work together to form the program.

THATCamp Cyprus is committed to explore the full breadth of how Technology and the Humanities intersect and integrate, while at the same time it wishes to take advantage of its Cyprus-specificity to suggest solutions to local questions. Hosted by the Visual Sociology and Museum Studies Lab (Cyprus University of Technology, Dept. of Multimedia and Graphic Arts) THATCamp Cyprus is also interested in how new technologies and platforms are changing fundamental things about social research, museums, archives, academia and education in more general terms.

Who should attend?
Anyone interested in studying, supporting, teaching, researching, creating or otherwise shaping digital humanities, humanistic social sciences, information sciences, new media, and any other allied fields. You can be an academic, a librarian, an archivist, a developer, a writer, a student (grad or undergrad), a curator, a designer, an educator, a public historian, an archaeologist, an independent scholar, or any combination thereof (as most of us are), or even a non-humanist. You can be an expert or a newbie; as long as you have something to talk about and things you want to learn regarding the intersection and integration of the humanities and technology, this is the place to be.

The sessions may range from software demos to training sessions to discussions of research findings to half-baked rants, but please no full-blown papers. Come to THATCamp with something in mind, and a desire to share it. This could be the place to bring up a project for rapid development, to articulate a theoretical concern or get feedback on an idea, and participants are also encouraged to propose coding and co-writing sessions where the emphasis is on doing, not talking.

CALL FOR PAPERS: The journal KNJIŽNICA (LIBRARY, ISSN 0023-2424) is now accepting proposals for publication in its international issue. KNJIŽNICA (LIBRARY, ISSN 0023-2424) is the first scientific journal in Slovenia to publish refereed articles and short communications presenting recent scientific and professional achievements in library and information science, book studies and related fields. KNJIŽNICA aspires to support the development of theory and practice and to raise the knowledge and skills of professional staff. Abstracts are invited for presentation in the international conference "Literacy and Society, Culture, Media, & Education" held at Ghent University 9-11 February 2012 http://www.literacyconference2012.ugent.be . The conference is conceived to offer a forum of discussion about digitality in/of society, culture (incl. literature and the other arts), and education. In an age of digitality and mass media, perceptions and practices of culture, cultural production and consumption, and thus also education and pedagogy -- from elementary to higher education from epistemological questions, classroom practices, and application (including technology), as well as institutional structures -- are undergoing rapid changes and debate. The impact of digitality thus results in the necessity of and demand for new perspectives on literacy(ies). Participants in the conference explore theories, practices, and applications for the study of the interrelations of digitality and contemporary society, culture, and pedagogy. Papers are presented in the thematic sections of 1) Media and Society, 2) Media and Culture, and 3) Media and Education. Conference: Third Book History Conference. July 7-9

The conference will discuss book inventories and catalogues in manuscript and print, between the 15th to the 18th century (see description below) with confirmed papers on printers’ and booksellers’ lists, private collectors, discussions of the fate of specific items, the collections of religious institutions. It will cover areas from the Baltic to Portugal, Italy, Denmark, Spain, France, Germany, and the British Isles. It has become customary in documenting the world of early printed books to rely primarily on surveys of survivors: that is, books that have weathered the buffeting of history to reach the comparative safety of modern library collections. Most national bibliographical catalogues are aggregates of the holdings of library catalogues; faute de mieux these are taken to offer a reasonable account of the original output. But the urge to list, catalogue and advertise the wealth of the new printed book culture was just as strong in the first age of books. Printers made lists of their available stock; owners proudly catalogued their libraries; assessors inventoried collections and stock as part of the settlement of estates, or legal proceedings. In an age of religious discord, censorship required the publication of lists of forbidden books (though at the risk of advertising their contents); book-sellers’ shelves, private and public libraries were examined for forbidden material. These various classes of lists contain indispensable material on various aspects of the 16th century book trade: on cost, retail pricing, second hand values, binding and library practice. They allow the reconstruction of lost or dispersed libraries. They also document many thousands of titles and editions that have now disappeared altogether.

The seventh IEEE e–Science conference, sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society´s Technical Committee for Scalable Computing (TCSC), will be held in Stockholm, Sweden from 5th – 8th December 2011.

Researchers in all disciplines are increasingly adopting digital tools, techniques and practices, often in communities and projects that span disciplines, laboratories, organizations, and national boundaries. The e-Science 2011 conference is designed to bring together leading international and interdisciplinary research communities, developers, and users of e-Science applications and enabling IT technologies. The conference serves as a forum to present the results of the latest research and product/tool developments and to highlight related activities from around the world. Also, we are now entering the second decade of e-Science and the 2011 conference gives an opportunity to take stake on what has been achieved so far and look forward to the challenges and opportunities the next decade will bring.

A special emphasis of the 2011 conference is on advances in the application of technology in a particular discipline. Accordingly, significant advances in science and technology will be considered as important as the development of new technologies themselves. Further, we welcome contributions in educational activities under any of these disciplines.

As a result, the conference will be structured around a number of e-Science themes:

OAI Workshops are *THE* Open Access event in Europe in the year in which they are held. They bring together a community of librarians, IT specialists, publishers, funders and researchers and are a real community occasion. Call for Work-in-Progress Papers

Describing scientific research data can be challenging due to their complexity and diversity. Standards for describing scientific datasets include not only entities responsible for data collection, processing, and distribution, but also information for data users to assess the relevancy to their data needs, quality of datasets, as well as technicalities regarding data file manipulation. Although scientific metadata schemes address a range of needs for data identification, quality assessment, verifiability, and dissemination, they do not fully address the challenges related to metadata generation and islands of information exist within and across scientific metadata records. One step towards addressing these challenges and problems is to have information scientists and domain scientists collaborate to evolve existing solutions in web-friendly ways. This one-day workshop will feature invited speakers from science and information science in the morning sessions and selected work-in-progress reports and interactive discussion in the afternoon.

The DC-SAM (DCMI Science and Metadata Community) workshop will include three parts: a morning session consists of invited speakers from both science and information science, a working lunch with focus group discussion, and an afternoon session for work-in-progress reports. This call is soliciting submissions of work-in-progress reports for the afternoon session. We are especially interested in, but not limited to, the following topics:

* Identification systems and standards for scientific metadata
* Scientific metadata architecture and models in Semantic Web
* Interoperable taxonomies and vocabularies in [biology, astronomy, etc.]
* Metadata linking mechanisms and technologies and their applications in scientific metadata
* Organizational and technical challenges in linking scientific metadata

The outcomes of this workshop are expected to be a collection of research papers/reports and a research agenda in this increasingly important area, which will be made available on DC-SAM community website.

Researchers are invited to submit reports for their projects relevant to the theme of this workshop, which are either work in progress or completed. The work-in-progress papers should be no more than six (6) pages, single spaced, (approximately 3,000 words including abstract and references). The submission should include the following components:

* Email addresses of authors
* Project website
* Abstract
* Tags or keywords
* Body of paper
* References cited

The papers will be reviewed by the workshop program committee and selected based on originality, coherence, clarity, and appropriateness for the workshop. Each selected paper will be given a 15-minute slot for oral presentation.

The University of Salford is proud to host the sixth Evidence Based Library and Information Practice (EBLIP6) Conference in Salford, Greater Manchester, UK, June 27th – June 30th 2011

This exciting international conference has grown out of an increasing interest in using the best available evidence in health libraries to improve library and information practice more generally.

Previous EBLIP conferences have been practical, friendly and inspirational in getting people involved in evidence-based practice. In ‘Valuing Knowledge and Expertise’, the stimulating and varied EBLIP6 programme of workshops, presentations and discussion has been specifically designed to appeal to library and information practitioners who may have previously thought that evidence based practice wasn't for them. It will provide a practical and accessible forum for librarians and information practitioners from all sectors to discover and disseminate evidence that may contribute to decision-making in professional practice.

The conference is chaired by two enthusiastic evidence based library and information professionals, Alison Brettle and Maria J Grant based within the School of Nursing & Midwifery, a forward thinking and dynamic School with a commitment to lifelong learning and evidence based practice.
