Call for Participation: ACRL/IS Mentoring Program. Apply by August 8

Do you want to lead? Do you want to share your professional library experience, and build a relationship with a new colleague? Feel the need for some professional mentoring? Then consider becoming a mentor or mentee for the ACRL/IS Mentoring Program for 2011-2012!

The purpose of the ACRL Instruction Section Mentoring Program is to contribute to the professional development of academic librarians who teach information literacy by pairing librarians experienced in teaching with librarians new to instruction or to the Instruction Section. Currently, we are especially seeking mentors to pair with the numerous librarians who have applied to our program as mentees. In order to create mentor/mentee pairs before the beginning of the Fall Semester, we ask that you fill out our online application by August 8. 

Both mentor and mentee applications are accepted year-round, and pairings are made in the summer and midwinter. Mentor applicants, please use this form, and mentees, please use this form.

The program creates a forum for learning opportunities, networking, and the exchange of ideas between paired mentors and mentees. Conference attendance is not required. In fact, much of the mentoring takes place outside of scheduled conferences. You can advance your expertise and help the profession into the future by joining the ACRL/IS Mentoring Program. Call for Participation: Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship. Due August 5

Headed to ALA or another professional conference this summer? Please consider sending reports on programs dealing with electronic resources in libraries to the "E-Resource Round Up" column for volume 23, number 4 of the Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship (JERL).

The "E-Resource Round Up" column is dedicated to helping JERL readers better understand topics related to the ever-changing world of electronic resources and their roles in libraries. It covers developments in the areas of new and emerging technologies and systems related to electronic resources and the digital environment; reports from professional discussion groups, meetings, presentations, and conferences; news and trends related to electronic resource librarianship; tips and suggestions on various aspects of working with electronic resources; opinion pieces; vendor activities; and upcoming events of potential interest to JERL readers.

Your contribution to the column does not have to be lengthy, and could be on any of the topics listed above. This could be an ideal opportunity for you to report on sessions you attended that may benefit others in our profession.

The editors would like to receive contributions to the column by Friday, August 5, 2011.

Call for Participation: ACRL Research Writer's Consultations. Due June 16

ACRL Research Writer's Consultations @ ALA Annual, June 23-28, 2011

The ACRL Research Program Committee (RPC) is once again sponsoring Research Writer’s Consultations at the ALA Annual Conference, held June 23 – 28, 2011 in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Aimed at the new or inexperienced writer, the Research Writer’s Consultations will pair new or inexperienced writers with an experienced writer or editor, who will offer guidance and critique.

AUTHORS

Are you an ACRL member working on a research article? Would you like some constructive feedback? Submit a draft research paper for consultation. RPC will match new writers with experienced writers and the pairs will meet face-to-face during the ACRL conference. Draft research papers must be submitted by June 16, 2011. Papers will be shared only among the designated pairs. Submission details follow:

Include on first page: Author’s name and contact information in upper left and a paragraph describing what you would like others to comment on about your paper (e.g., grammar, writing style, clarity, presentation of the research methodology).

Page limit:  25 double-spaced pages, standard 1” margins

Preferred format:  Microsoft Word. Number pages. Footers should include author’s full name and e-mail.

Draft research papers should be in complete enough form for others to read easily.

I’m looking for a few presenters to speak to job seekers in the Placement Center during the upcoming ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.  The Placement Center will be open Saturday and Sunday, June 25 & 26.

I’d like to have presenters who know how to interact with and involve the audience -- not just lecture.  The sessions should be an hour to an hour and a half long.  The possible time slots include:

Call for Participation: Encyclopedia of Women and American Pop Culture.

The Encyclopedia of Women and American Popular Culture

Facts On File, a New York-based academic and reference publisher, is seeking contributing scholars for a print and online reference work on the history of women in America popular culture from colonial times to the present. The project is aimed at the academic high school and undergraduate levels. 

The encyclopedia will include articles on individuals, organizations, themes, events, ideas, works of art and literature, and more. Alphabetically arranged entries cover popular-culture and women’s history subjects— film; television; music; radio; comics and graphic novels; visual and performing arts; festivals; technology; cyberculture and online social networking; video games; sports and recreation; fashion and appearance; advertising; consumer products (including toys and games); transportation and travel; and food and diet.

Articles will vary in length from 500-2,500 words for entries on specific topics. The Encyclopedia of Women and American Popular Culture will also include a number of ancillary features, including overarching introductory essays and a detailed bibliography. We are seeking contributors for articles. All contributors will receive full authorial credit, a modest cash honorarium and/or copy of the full encyclopedia set (depending on contribution length and contributor preference). 

If you are a Ph.D. candidate, professor, or independent scholar interested in contributing to this exciting and important reference project, we would be happy to email you a prospectus with a full description of the project—with deadline, compensation, and other pertinent information. We are seeking librarians with experience in human resources, the
hiring process or search committees to review resumes & cover letters
via email. This service is sponsored by NMRT to assist job seekers new
to the profession.

How does it work?
Job seekers (reviewees) send their resumes to the Résumé Review
Service (RRS) email account with some information about the type of
library that they are interested in and their area of specialization.
The co-chairs of the Résumé Review Service, monitor this email account
and match the reviewee with a reviewer from our list.

If you are matched with an applicant, the following will occur:

1. One of co-chairs will contact you and will ask if you are able to
complete a review within 2 weeks.

2. Please respond to the email as soon as you can, either accepting or
declining the review.

3. If you are unable to review, just reply and let us know. We will
contact another reviewer. We realize that everyone is busy and that
some times are better than others.

4. If you accept, then we will send you the resume and/or cover
letter, along with a bit of information about the reviewee.

5. Please take a look at the review tips here:

. Sometimes the reviewee will ask for specific advice on a part of

Call for Participation: Reference Publishing Advisory Committee (part of RUSA)

Reference Publishing Advisory Committee, part of RUSA Collection Development and Evaluation Section, is looking for addition committee members for this year. This is the only committee within ALA charged to foster interactions among reference librarians, collection development librarians/reference collection bibliographer/selector, and reference publishing industry staff.

For this upcoming Mid-Winter Meeting, we plan to hold a discussion forum focusing on cataloging and discovery issues related to e-reference publishing. At annual, the committee will be offering a program looking at future trends and issues related to reference publishing. ABC-CLIO is pleased to announce the preparation of a major new reference set, Climate Change: An Encyclopedia of Science and History, under the general editorship of Brian Black (of Penn State University’s Altoona College). This four-volume set will include essays approaching climate change from multiple perspectives, including scientific background, historical context, and public policy.
